Overview
The school was built in 1964, and the architecture is very old. The school has never been renovated, and has two floors. The gymnasium floor is the newest part of the building, as the floor has recently been replaced. The school district is currently planning renovations. Expanding classroom space by adding a whole new wing to the building is the main focus due to the fact that currently some classes must be held in portables. A new gym is also planned, converting the old one into an auxiliary gym. Additions to the band room and remodling of the main office space will cap off the renovations.[2]
2006 District Grant
In 2006, Southern Hills Middle School won a 2 Million dollar grant for technology. Principal Terry Gillach has decided to spend it on Smart Boards for all the teachers, and adding an extra computer lab.
The Computer Labs
There are three computer labs that are currently in use, and a fourth is under construction. All of the labs have names: the "Flatirons Lab" (which has a large window with views of the Flatirons), "Cougar Cave" (named after the mascot of Southern Hills Middle School, the cougar, and because the lab has no windows) and "Donald's Dungeon" (used by John Donald for Applied Technology(this room has no windows either)).
