Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU) has a law school in Carbondale and a School of Medicine in Springfield.
Southern Illinois University is rated as one of the nation’s premier research institutions in rankings by The Carnegie Foundations for the Advancement of Teaching. The Carbondale campus is home to 21,000 students who enroll in 186 academic programs, including degree programs in law and medicine. While 79% of the students are Illinois residents, other students come to the university from all fifty states and 100 foreign nations.
The university was founded in 1869 with a dozen academic departments and an inaugural class of 143. Southern Illinois University is now one of Illinois’ most comprehensive universities. Among the academic programs, students will find regionally recognized programs in agriculture, art, aviation, automotive technology, anthropology, business, cinema-photography, education, engineering, foreign language study, forestry, journalism, music, political science, radio-television, social work, recreation, and rehabilitation – just to name a few.
The mascot of SIU is the Saluki, an ancient breed of hunting dog from Egypt. Little Egypt is the traditional nickname of the southern region of Illinois. SIU is well known for its men’s basketball team, which was invited to its sixth consecutive NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament in 2007, which includes three Sweet Sixteen appearances (1977, 2002 & 2007).
Southern Illnois University is surrounded by the Shawnee National Forest, fields, lakes and bluffs. The region is an outdoor paradise for boaters, rock climbers, hikers, nature lovers, hunters and horseback riders.
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) is the Edwardsville, Illinois campus of the university. The institution features a College of Pharmacy, a School of Dental Medicine at Alton and a center in East St. Louis that provides clinical and practicum experiences for SIUE students in the arts, education, health, and social services.
