SOUTHSIDE HIGH SCHOOL (GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA)

'Southside High School' is one of 14 public high schools that are part of the Greenville, South Carolina County Schools System. It is the first school in South Carolina to be home to an International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. The school, however, was rocked by scandal in 2006-2007 when a well liked school administrator and social studies teacher, Mr. Lance Diefenderfer (Mr. D), was arrested and found guilty of deliquency of a minor. According to The Greenville News, Lance would convince a female classmate to kiss him after class and meet him at his apartment where they would engage in acts not proper between a teacher and his student. 'Mr. D' has now had his teachers license revoked, faces 1 year of home incarceration, 3 years probation, and a $3,000 fine. Many in the community are calling for Principle Paulette Payne's resignation when it came to light that she knew about the crime that took place and did not take action against the teacher.

SAT Performance

According to a report by the Greenville County School District[1], Southside students scored 1023 on average on the SATs in 2003. This is 12 points higher than the Greenville County School Average (1011) and 7 points higher than the national public school SAT average (1016). This average may not clearly represent the distinction between the two distinct academic groups present at the school, the local zoned enrollment and the magnet enrollment due to the school's Advanced Placement and IB Diploma Programs.

Advanced Placement and IB Diploma Programs

Southside is the first high school in South Carolina to offer an International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. Southside couples the IB Diploma Program with the opportunity for students to take Advanced Placement Program exams. Many courses taught at the school incorporate expected materials from both programs. In addition, the IB Middle Years Program will be implemented starting in the Fall of 2006.
In 2002, 103 students from Southside took 383 AP exams. 45 percent of those exams were scored at 3 or higher (generally considered a passing score). In the same year, 63 students took 230 IB Diploma exams with 63% of these exams scored at 4 or higher. [2]. The school offers AP courses in the following subject areas: Art, Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, Computer Science, English, European History, French, German, Macroeconomics, Physics, Psychology, Spanish, Statistics, U. S. History. [3]
