SPAULDING HIGH SCHOOL

Spaulding High School and Barre Technical Center, more commonly called Spaulding High School or SHS-BTC, is a high school located in the city of Barre, Vermont. The campus slogan is, "Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships."^[1]

Sports

All Spaulding sports teams are referred to as the "Crimson Tide", a reference to Red Tide algae blooms. The mascot is "Raymond the Shark."Spaulding has had recent success with their wrestling team, which came in second in the state this year. Also their basketball and hockey programs have done very well.

Crimson Crazies

Also, a group of students displaying "Tide Pride" formed the notorious Crimson Crazies in 2005. Created by students, the Crazies are based on a similar group from Duke University. The Crazies are identified by their crimson shirts and sweathshirts, rigorous cheers, and loud antics. The community has come to embrace the Crimson Crazies as an unofficial cheering section known to raise spirits and bring fans to their feet.

Drama

Spaulding High School also boasts an impressive Drama Club, having recently performed such classics as Disney's Beauty and the Beast, The Mikado, The Foreigner, and The Threepenny Opera. For thirty years, known within the school as "The Golden Age of SHS Drama", Illene Gillander masterfully directed musicals, plays, and musical revues for the SHS stage. In 2005, she directed her final show with the SHS Drama Club, Beauty and the Beast. Since her departure, Tom Blachly of Marshfield has stepped into the shoes of artisitic director. Whereas Gillander was a fan of large casts, moving musicals, and well-known shows, Blachly is renowned for his love of obscure, heady, small-cast shows. Due to controversy surrounding previous productions, Blachly's contract as Drama Coach has not been renewed for the 2007-2008 academic year.
On August 28th, 2007, an exciting announcment was made at Spaulding High School. Illene Gillander was formally announced as the new drama director for the 2007-2008 school year. She returns to SHS after a two-year absence from the high school stage. With her return, rumors of The Nerd and The Scarlet Pimpernel being the year's productions were quelled. Also on August 28th, it was formally announced that the Stephen Sondheim classic Into the Woods would be the only production to take place during Illene Gillander's one-show return. No announcments have been made regarding the future of the club or possible directors after Gillander's one-show return. Auditions for Into the Woods will take place September 19th, 20th, and 21st, 2007 in the Spaulding High School auditorium.
