A Fluorspar mine in St. Lawrence was once a major employer in the community until 1978, when Alcan closed the mine. A recent wind project has been announced by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador for St. Lawrence. The project will result in the installation of 14, 1.8MW turbines.
On February 18, 1942, more than two hundred American sailors died when the U.S.S. Pollux and U.S.S Truxton ran aground in Chamber Cove.
