The northern part of the ward is dominated by Kilvey Hill. A residential belt lies in the central part of the ward. The southern part of the ward consists of the docklands, part of which is undergoing re-development as a new commercial and residential district.
The suburb of 'St. Thomas' is a residential area located immediately east of Swansea city centre. This is the birth place of singer Harry Secombe. Port Tennant and Grenfell Park, further east of St. Thomas are small council estates comprising fairly run down housing stock. Swansea's Fabian Way Park and Ride facility is located to the far east of the ward.
The River Tawe forms part of the border between St. Thomas and the Castle ward. On the east bank in St. Thomas, there is a grassy recreational area that includes a footpath and cycle track (part of NCR 43). The area is hardly used for recreation purposes by the local population and there are proposals to re-develop the area with new housing. This proposal has met with some opposition from residents on Kilvey Hill who currently have a good view of the river.
