STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK AT ONEONTA


The 'State University of New York at Oneonta' is a four-year liberal arts college in Oneonta, New York, United States, with approximately 5,800 students. The College offers many bachelor's degrees and a number of graduate degrees. SUNY Oneonta is particularly renowned for its education program (given its traditional context at the college) and more recently its music industry degree.

History


Established in 1889 as a state normal school with the sole mission of training teachers, the College at Oneonta was a founding member of the State University of New York system in 1948. The 'State University of New York at Oneonta' was also used in the 1973 cult horror film ''The Last House on Dead End Street'' (aka ''The Fun House''). The film was made by then SUNY Oneonta student Roger Michael Watkins and featured entirely local talent, including SUNY professor Paul M. Jensen.

SUNY Oneonta has various types of living arrangements, ranging from doubles to apartments. The double residence halls are mainly for freshman but anyone can stay if them if you request it. The names of the halls are Golding, Hulbert, Littell and Wilber. Hulbert features a dining hall in the basement of the residence hall.
The quads are Ford, Grant, Hayes, Huntington and Sherman.
The apartment style room which is also know is a suite are found in: Blodgett, Macduff, Matteson, and Curtis.
Designed Singles are offered in limited number in Ford, Grant, Hays, Higgins (within apartments), Huntington, and Sherman. IRPs are granted on a space available basis.

Along with education, there are several extracirricular activities a student may choose, which include clubs that span many interests, which are overseen by the Student Association, Division III Sports, and Greek Life.

SUNY Oneonta sports teams are nicknamed the "Red Dragons." SUNY Oneonta teams participate and compete within NCAA's Division III and in the State University Athletic Conference. Except for Men's Soccer, which is currently transitioning from Division I to Division III and will be eligible for NCAA D-3 and SUNYAC competition in 2008. All of Oneonta's athletic teams also compete in the Eastern College Athletic Conference.
Oneonta's teams practice and compete in numerous athletic facilities. The most notable of which include:
•The Alumni Field House, which is home to the women's volleyball team and the men's and women's basketball teams and has a seating capacity of 4,000 in the Dewar Arena which also includes an indoor running track above the main floor.
•The Red Dragon Soccer Field, for men & women's soccer.
•The All College Field, home to women & men's lacrosse, field hockey, men & women's track & field activities
Oneonta has long been known for its strong soccer programs, both men's & women's. In 2003, the women's soccer team captured the NCAA Division III National Champioship over the University of Chicago. It was the first National Title in SUNY Oneonta's history of athletic competition. The program currently has a 94 game winning streak within conference play in the SUNYAC. The streak is the longest conference winning streak in NCAA history (all divisions.)
SUNY Oneonta's Track team in 2006 finished 3rd at the NCAA Division III championships, where Musu Jackson-Buckner was the individual National Champion for the 200 meter run. Oneonta's Track team is only in its 7th year of NCAA competition and already has 13 All-Americans, many of them repeat All-Americans (4 men, 9 women). The women's outdoor track team has won 3 straight ECAC Championships.
