![]() | Ojas laser Eye Centre - C3R UVX A non-invasive treatment C3-R® (corneal collagen cross-linking riboflavin) treatment has been proven to strengthen the weak corneal structure in keratoconus. This method works by increasing collagen cross-linking, which are the natural "anchors" within the cornea. These anchors are responsible for preventing the cornea from bulging out and becoming steep and irregular (which is the cause of keratoconus). The figures above show the parallel corneal layers (white) and the collagen cross-linking (red) which are increased after C3-R® treatment. The 30-minute C3-R® treatment is performed in our office and is a one-time treatment. During the treatment, custom-made riboflavin eyedrops are applied to the cornea, which is then activated by a special light. This is the process that has been shown in laboratory and clinical studies to increase the amount of collagen cross-linking in the cornea and strengthen the cornea. In published European studies, such treatments were proven safe and effective in patients. The collagen crosslinking with riboflavin has its roots in dermatology. Doctors were looking for a way to strengthen sagging skin and realized that triggering collagen cross linking was the way to achieve this. The process was taken one step further by eye physicians in Germany who performed initial studies. They reported results of treatments done as long ago as 1998, so there is a good track record for this procedure. Links to these research publications can be found to the left side of this page. It is important to note in these studies that the proper dosages of the components are a very important part of the treatment. When used properly, there were no negative effects. C3-R® treatments can also be combined with Intacs® to flatten the keratoconus cone even more than with Intacs alone. In these cases, C3-R® treatments stablize keratoconus from getting worse as well as help the Intacs® reverse the keratoconus steepening that had already occurred up to the time of the treatment. The figure above demonstrates almost 10 diopters of corneal flattening in one patient before (left) after this combined treatment (right). Natural progression of keratoconus in a patient's eyes over 1.5 years. Notice the dramatic lower cone steepening (red) and increased astigmatism over this short period of time. C3-R® can halt this progression and prevent these progressive distortions in vision. Note: not all keratoconus progresses this rapidly. |

![]() | Sunset over the croft I was shooting some handheld footage of pig feeding time and had stopped due to poor light. However, I started filming again when we had a last, glorious burst of sunset. Unfortunately, I didn't have the tripod out with me so the panning is wonky, not helped by me sinking into the mud at one point - look for the steepening hill and listen to the slurp as I try to get my boot free. The grunting is the pigs - not me! |
![]() | Off to Yosemite day6 NEVADA FALLS nevada fallsNevada Fall[1] is a 594-foot (181 m) high waterfall on Merced River in Yosemite National Park, California. It is located below the granite dome, Liberty Cap, at the west end of Little Yosemite Valley. The Emerald Pool forms on the "step" between Nevada Fall and Vernal Fall downstream. The 317-foot (97 m) high Vernal Fall is a short hike from the bottom of Nevada Fall. They form a cascade in which Merced River flows down to Yosemite Valley. This cascade is sometimes called the giant staircase, which is evident when viewed from above, at Glacier Point. The hike to the top of Nevada Fall, along the Mist Trail, is 3.4 miles (5.5 km) from the trailhead in Yosemite Valley. One must first hike to Vernal Fall and then trek another 2 miles (3.2 km) to reach the top. The Merced River rises in the high country of the Sierra Crest, springing from snowfields and glaciers on Mount Lyell, highest peak in the park. It drops steadily through U-shaped glacial canyons, running right through two sizeable alpine lakes, Washburn and Merced. As it approaches Nevada Falls it flows quietly through tranquil meanders over the almost flat floor of Little Yosemite Valley, steepening only in the last hundred yards as it accelerates down a chute and bursts forth from the cliff as Nevada Falls. Though it is the most remote of the major falls in Yosemite, Nevada is easily viewed from Glacier Point, 1300 feet above and two miles away. It is also possible to hike to the top of the falls, either by following the river up past Vernal Falls, or by taking the Panorama Trail, which traces the cliff edges all the way from Glacier Point. There is a deep green pool just above this falls. Despite fences and warning signs hikers wade and sometimes swim here, and almost every year someone is swept over the falls. As the sign bluntly warns "IF YOU SLIP AND GO OVER THE WATERFALL YOU WILL DIE." |

Here at the curve, the grade is slightly easier then the grades on both ends of it. East towards Altoona, the ruling grade for westbounds is 1.74%. West towards Gallitzin, the grade steepens to 1.86%. Shot from the West Side of Horseshoe Curve on 7/11/08. |
![]() | BIRNAM HILL The Highland villages of Dunkeld and Birnam straddle the River Tay and are surrounded by some of the finest woodlands in Scotland. However, more famously, Beatrix Potter wrote the 'Tale of Peter Rabbit' in Birnam. At auction [November 2008] an illustrated Beatrix Potter unnamed rabbit who had never featured in any of her books, sold for £15,600. Likewise, a Xmas card designed by Potter in 1893 featuring three guinea pigs in a basket, sold for a remarkable £12,600. This walk starts at Birnam (for Dunkeld) railway station, on the Perth-Inverness line and begins by walking through the famous 'B.P' gardens. This is the beginning of the ascent of the 404m Birnam Hill on the edge of the Highland boundary fault line: a walk through mainly deciduous woodlands passing around the eastern flank of the Hill before climbing from the south. A short detour leads to the ancient Stair Bridge and magnificent views across the Disney-esqe landscape to the turreted castle that is Rohallion Lodge, complete with lake and surrounded by colourful, forested hills. Returning to the ascent path which steepens with the final climb to the summit of the hill, where a huge cairn (also referred to as the King's Seat) awaits. Dramatic views ensue; both up Strath Tay to Dunkeld and the Highlands and down towards Perth. In this particular video however, its the autumnal colour views that are the reward. The direct descent from the cairn goes through first coniferous and then deciduous forest with a final slightly steep and slippery descent before returning to the village that sprang up in the Victorian era when the famous Victorian writer Potter spent her summer holidays there. Birnam and Birnam Hill were also made famous by Shakespeare in Macbeth (The Scottish Play). "Macbeth shall never vanquishd be until Great Birnam wood to high Dunsinane hill Shall come against him." ... . . . . . . Remember, if you frequent the local pub afterwards and get asked .."What do you call a female who can pot the black off all the cushions, while balancing a beer on her head?" - - - - - well you now know the answer - - "beer tricks potter" !!!! |
