Biography

Personal

Stephen Pearl was born in London on July 5, 1934. He grew up in a family that spoke no other language except English. His basic and higher education was in classical Latin and Greek. He is a graduate of St. John's College, Oxford University with an M.A. in Classics. Between high school and college, Pearl served in the military where he was taught Russian. He also studied Russian at the Department of Slavonic Studies in Cambridge University, in preparation for his duties in the Royal Air Force. He also spent some time in Turkey and Germany to learn Turkish and German.
Interpreting career

Upon his return to Britain from Turkey and Germany – and after reading an advertisement in a newspaper - Pearl went for an interview in London to apply for a job as a UN interpreter. Prior to being hired by the United Nations, he worked as teacher of liberal studies at a fine arts college for three months. He became an interpreting trainee at UN headquarters in New York in August 1962.
Contributions to interpreting profession

Later on, Pearl became head of the English booth and contributed to the changes made in the selection criteria for new interpreters. He was one of the few UN staff interpreters who had taken time to reflect in writing about the profession, about its practical problems and on how to solve them by means of training programs.
After his official retirement from the UN, Pearl continued to apply and present his training methods at several institutions dedicated to the training of interpreters.
Music and film connections

Apart from being a U.N. English interpreter. Pearl is also a musician who plays the clarinet. He performs for The Centre Symphony Orchestra, a group that usually holds seasonal concerts at the St. Peter's Church in Lexington Avenue, Manhattan, New York, and is managed by his wife and fellow interpreter, Brigitte Andreassier-Pearl. Pearl's wife was one of the two real-life conference interpreters behind Sydney Pollack's film thriller, ''The Interpreter'', which starred the actors ''Nicole Kidman'' and ''Sean Penn''.[1]
