STEVEN MENZIES
(Redirected from Steve Menzies)
'Steven "Beaver" Menzies' (born December 4, 1973 in Manly, New South Wales) is an Australian professional rugby league footballer in the National Rugby League. His usual position is in the back row. Menzies is best known as one of the most prolific try scoring forwards in rugby league.
Menzies started his professional league career in 1993 for Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles, and remained at the club ever since, including being a part of the clubs joint venture with the North Sydney Bears as the Northern Eagles. Some statisticians do not list Menzies as a "one club player", due to the joint venture, however the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles certainly do, arguing that he never left the club and that the joint venture was simply another ownership phase as has happened with other clubs who's records are not separated. One such club is the New Zealand Warriors.
He rose to prominence 1994 through his pace and outstanding try-scoring abilities. His 190 cm (6 foot 3 inch) height gave him tremendous mobility for a forward even though he was not heavily framed compared with most forwards he played with at 98 kg (15 st 6 lb). In 1994 Menzies scored 16 tries, was named the league's rookie of the year, and finished second in the Rothmans Medal, just behind North Sydney Bears' David Fairleigh. He was also selected for the 1994 Kangaroo Tour.
In 1995 Menzies became the first forward for 50 years to top the season's try-scoring list and made his State Of Origin debut for New South Wales. He has so far represented New South Wales 18 times (12 as a replacement) and Australia 15 times.
Menzies played in three grand finals with Manly in 1995, 1996 and 1997, contributing to Manly's 1996 win with a try. Although Manly have been unable to repeat this success due to decimation of the squad, Menzies' form has rarely suffered and even at 33 he remains a highly respected player.
Menzies has so far scored 167 tries in his first grade career, tying for 2nd for most tries scored in premiership history, as well as being the most scored by a forward, beating Frank Burge's tally of 146 when he scored against St George Illawarra on August 28, 2004.
Menzies' favoured position is in the second row, but has had stints in the centers. In round 22 of the 2007 NRL premiership, Steve Menzies played as five-eighth, and for a short period while Matt Orford was off, he played at half-back, showing his versatility and knack for Rugby League.
Total Manly games 319.
On Saturday the 8th of September 2007, Menzies scored his 166th and 167th tries (against South Sydney, in the 16th and 77th minutes of the game respectively). He is the games' second most prolific try scorer.
