STONECLOUGH

'Stoneclough' is a small village located on the banks of the River Irwell to the south-east of Bolton, in Greater Manchester, England, even though the postal address of this area is for Manchester, the village is actually under the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton. The village is one of a cluster of villages, including Prestolee and Ringley. In the past, these were particularly important due to the river crossing between Bolton and Manchester. This point can be seen in the village of Ringley.
There are a number of listed buildings and recognised ancient monuments in the villages including Ringley Bridge, the village stocks, Kearsley Mill, St Saviour's Church & Clock Tower and the large stone railway bridge on the Manchester to Bolton line.
The villages today are mostly residential where most of the old industry was situated. These industrial sites included the large paper factory owned by Fletcher and Sons and Kearsley Power Station located on Hulme Road. These have both since been demolished.
