This article details the first year of Europe's new new top-level professional rugby league championship: Super League (Europe). It is also the first season of rugby league to be played in summer with current champions Wigan Warriors hoping to maintain their hold on the newly formed Super League championship. At the end of the season St Helens RLFC were crowned Super League champions after finishing in first position on the league ladder and where officially the first Super League champions. In the same year a secondary title, known as the Premiership was also played, with the final being between Wigan Warriors and the super league champions St. Helens with Wigan coming out victorious.
