SUPERIOR HIGH SCHOOL


'Superior High School' (SHS) is one of the high schools located in Superior, Wisconsin (The other one being Maranatha Academy, a private school). It replaced East and Central High Schools in 1965 which became middle schools (both were closed and torn down in 2003). It is a part of the School District of Superior, and with a student body of around 1,600, the high school serves grades 9-12 with a staff of around 150. The mission of SHS is to “Provide all children with the relevant tools to develop a foundation for living, learning and working successfully.â€

Some subjects taught include algebra, calculus, chemistry, physics, history (throughout the ages), electrical classes (for potential electricians), body shop (car), classes, woodworking, English, four different languages and more.

SHS also offers advanced placement classes where students can take tests for college credits. One can do this in history, math, science, language, and English.
Many scholarship are also available for students planning to attend either a two-year or four-year higher learning institution. The major scholarship is generally referred to as the "Nelson Scholarship" which grants scholarships worth up to $6,000. The Superior Scholarship Foundation also maintains a database of local scholarships.
Recently, the graduation rate has begun to decline. Superior has one of the worst graduation rates in the state of Wisconsin. And recently, the school has attempted to change this. They have begun programs that keep kids on track and have counsellors make sure that most seniors are on track to graduate. [2]

Because of its proximity to Minnesota, Superior High School athletics competes primarily with schools located in Minnesota. The next closest Wisconsin school SHS competes with is either Eau Claire or Hudson.

★ Team mascot is the Spartans

★ For the first 30 years of the school's life it only served grades 10-12, but was renovated in 1995 with new science rooms to accommodate grade 9. Additional renovations that year included a new library and an auditorium known as the Performing Arts Center (or P.A.C.).

★ Formally known as Superior Senior High School but name changed in 2003 to authenticate the changing of the structure of the school

★ School colors are Columbia blue and white

★ Superior High School FBLA has taken first place in the state of Wisconsin for the last twenty-one (21) years.
