SVERIGES RADIO

'Sveriges Radio' (SR) - ''Radio of Sweden Ltd'' - is Sweden's national publicly funded radio broadcaster. The Swedish public-broadcasting system is in many respects modelled after the one used in the United Kingdom, and Sveriges Radio - and television - shares many characteristics with its British counterpart, the BBC.
Sveriges Radio is a public limited company, owned by an independent foundation, and funded through a licensing fee determined by the Swedish Parliament. No advertising is permitted. SR's status could be described as that of a quasi-autonomous non-governmental organization.
The Swedish broadcasting company was founded in 1925 as Radiotjänst (''Radio service''), and was renamed Sveriges Radio in 1957. SR was originally responsible for all broadcasting in Sweden and hosted the Eurovision Song Contest 1975; however, in 1979 SR was organised into a group of companises consisting of Sveriges Riksradio (RR) ''Swedish National Radio'', Sveriges Lokalradio (LRAB)''Swedish Local Radio'', Sveriges Utbildningsradio (UR) ''Swedish Educational Radio'' and Sveriges Television (SVT) ''Swedish Television'' . SR then continued as a parent company. In 1993 the parental organisation was dissolved and the National and Local radio merged into one new radio company under the old parent company name; Sveriges Radio AB.
