SWEETWATER RIVER (CALIFORNIA)
The 'Sweetwater River' is a river in southern San Diego County, California. The river's headwaters are in the Cuyamaca Mountains. The river flows roughly southwest for about 55 miles and empties into the middle of San Diego Bay. There are two reservoirs on the Sweetwater River. Loveland Lake, about 5 miles (8 km) south of the city of Alpine is the first. Loveland Dam was completed in 1945 and the lake can hold 25,400 acre-feet (31,000,000 m³) of water. The second is Sweetwater Reservoir, about 9 miles southeast of the city of San Diego. The 28,100 acre-foot (35,000,000 m³) reservoir is formed by Sweetwater Dam, completed in 1888. The river's watershed includes about 200 square miles, stretching from Cleveland National Forest to San Diego Bay.
