T.J. MAXX
(Redirected from TJ Maxx)
'T.J. Maxx' is a chain of American off-price department stores owned by TJX Companies. T.J. Maxx opened its first stores on March 31, 1977, in Worcester and Auburn, Massachusetts. It is the largest off-price clothing retailer in the United States offering brand name clothing, footwear, bedding, furniture, jewelry, beauty products, and housewares. All merchandise is at least 20 - 60% below regular department and specialty store prices. The company operates 800 stores nationwide, and has further growth opportunities in the U.S. The average store size of a T.J. Maxx store is 30,000 square feet.
In 1976, T.J. Maxx was founded in Framingham, Massachusetts, by Taras Sokil as a nameplate of the Zayre discount department store chain. When Zayre sold their own nameplate to Ames, a rival discount department store, "TJX Companies, Incorporated" was formed.
T.J. Maxx operates in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland under the name "T.K. Maxx", to avoid confusion with the chain T J Hughes. The first T.K. Maxx store opened in 1994 in Bristol.
Since 1984, T.J. Maxx has supported the Save the Children campaign. In 2005, “Happy Hearts” raised over 1.25 million to support U.S. children and families in need. In addition, each store supports one child. T.J. Maxx also supports Autism Speaks and other charities.
Commercials in the 1980s featured a jingle with the words "T T T T T T T TJ Maxx, never ever the same place twice. Yesterday, next week, next Saturday night. It's never ever the same place twice". The commercials featured pictures of the store changing around its racks of clothing and other items. Commercials in the 2000s featured the "Dada dada dada TJ Maxx you should go!" jingle. They also featured women and children's clothing running around with displays, and then without them while slashing the price. Thus contrasting the department stores to TJX.
