'Tarapacá' is Chile's northernmost administrative region, hence also known as 'I Región' ("1st Region") in the standard north-to-south numbering of Chilean regions. It borders the Peruvian Tacna Region on the north, Bolivia's La Paz and Oruro departments on the east, the Antofagasta Region on the south and the Pacific Ocean on the west.
Tarapacá is a former Peruvian province, which was annexed by neighbouring Chile under the 1883 Treaty of Ancón at the close of the War of the Pacific.
