Plot summary

Tarzan is captured by an insane, yet beautiful queen of a lost city. This novel is perhaps best known for two scenes, the first, where Tarzan is forced to fight the strongest man in the City of Gold in it's arena. While an ordinary man might have been in trouble, Tarzan easily overpowered the strongest man in the City. The second scene, where Tarzan is forced to fight a lion, starts with Tarzan being forced to run away from a hunting lion, which will hunt him down and kill him. Tarzan at first believes he can outrun the lion, (lions tired after the first 100 yards at top speed). However, when faced with a lion breed specifically for endurance, Tarzan turns to face him, though knowing without a knife he can do little but delay the inevitable. Typical of Tarzan adventures, his old pet "Golden" lion arrives to fight the Queen's hunting lion, and saves Tarzan. The Queen, who believes her life is linked to that of her hunting lion, kills herself when it dies.
