TATE COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI


'Tate County' is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi, just east of the Mississippi Delta. As of 2000, the population was 25,370. Its county seat is Senatobia6. James Earl Jones, an actor famous for being the voice of Darth Vader, was born in Tate County. Tate County is named for the prominent local Tate family.
Tate County is part of the Memphis, Tennessee Metropolitan Area.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,064 km² (411 mi²). 1,048 km² (404 mi²) of it is land and 17 km² (6 mi²) of it (1.57%) is water.

As of the census² of 2000, there were 25,370 people, 8,850 households, and 6,717 families residing in the county. The population density was 24/km² (63/mi²). There were 9,354 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (23/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 67.84% White, 31.02% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. 0.88% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 8,850 households out of which 36.10% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.00% were married couples living together, 15.50% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.10% were non-families. 21.30% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.10% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.18.
In the county the population was spread out with 27.10% under the age of 18, 11.70% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 22.30% from 45 to 64, and 11.40% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 93.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.50 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $35,836, and the median income for a family was $41,423. Males had a median income of $33,064 versus $21,154 for females. The per capita income for the county was $16,154. About 10.60% of families and 13.50% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.20% of those under age 18 and 21.10% of those age 65 or over.
