TECUMSEH, ONTARIO

'Tecumseh' (2001 population 25,105) is a town on Lake St. Clair east of Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
Originally known as 'Ryegate Postal Station' when it was first settled in 1792, Tecumseh was renamed in 1912 after the Shawnee tribe leader of the same name. It was officially incorporated as a town in 1921. Tecumseh had a large French population and when nearby Windsor started to grow into the area, considerable angst between the English and French developed.
In 1999, as part of a reorganization of Essex County, Tecumseh was merged with the Village of St. Clair Beach, and the Township of Sandwich South into the Town of Tecumseh. In 2003, the City of Windsor annexed approximately 23 km² from the Town of Tecumseh. Now considered to be a bedroom community of Windsor, Tecumseh is often cited as an example of urban sprawl; new subdivisions have developed on some of Canada's most valuable agricultural land beginning in the late 1980s.
Food processing is a major industry in Tecumseh, as Carriere owns a food processing plant near the heart of the town. The plant originally was Green Giant and Pilsbury/Green Giant sold in the late 1990s to Family Traditions. Family Tradition recently sold the food processing plant to Carriere.
Tecumseh is home to former Canadian Olympic bobsledder Chris Lori, Olympic bronze medal-winning decathlete Dave Steen, Paralympic champion swimmer Danielle Campo, and former NHL player Tim Kerr.
Every August, Tecumseh hosts the Tecumseh Corn Fest, a four-day festival celebrating corn and the town's agriculture. The festival's mascot is named "Nibby". The Corn Fest draws people from all over the county, and even some from Chatham-Kent and Detroit, Michigan. The town also has concerts at the festival, and has hosted such large names as Shania Twain and Eddie Money in the past.
Local sports team is Western Junior B Hockey's Tecumseh Chiefs.
