TELFORD, PENNSYLVANIA

'Telford' is a borough in Pennsylvania, straddling both Bucks and Montgomery Counties. The population was 4,680 at the 2000 census.

History

Originally inhabited by the Lenape, the area surrounding Telford began to be settled in 1719 by Mennonites from the Rhenish Palatinate. In 1857 the town known as Hendrick’s Blacksmith changed its name to Telford after the North Pennsylvania Railroad Company named their new station located there "Telford" after the civil engineer Thomas Telford.
Telford Borough was incorporated in 1886 in Bucks County, whereas West Telford Borough was incorporated in Montgomery County in 1887. In 1936 a state law—which prohibited the boundaries of a borough from extending into another county—was changed and the two boroughs merged to form a single 'Borough of Telford'.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 4,680 people, 1,930 households, and 1,200 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,789.1/km² (4,618.2/mi²). There were 1,977 housing units at an average density of 755.8/km² (1,950.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough was 92.48% White, 1.30% African American, 0.02% Native American, 3.76% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.13% from other races, and 1.28% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.61% of the population.
There were 1,930 households out of which 29.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.1% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.8% were non-families. 33.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the borough the population was spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 88.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.5 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $45,451, and the median income for a family was $56,809. Males had a median income of $38,750 versus $28,387 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $22,075. About 2.5% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.3% of those under age 18 and 5.3% of those age 65 or over.
