THE HI-LO'S
The Hi-Lo's were a successful a cappella quartet formed in 1953. They named themselves the "Hi-Lo's" to emphasize their collective vocal range.
The group consisted of:
★ Gene Puerling, bass-baritone, arranger and leader
★ Bob Strasen, baritone
★ Bob Morse, baritone and occasional soloist
★ Clark Burroughs, tenor
In 1959, Don Shelton replaced Strasen. They are considered a musical influence on groups like The Manhattan Transfer and Chanticleer. They were also supported by Frank Sinatra. One of the arrangers, and their pianist for years, was the harmonic genius Clare Fischer.
Bob Morse died in 2001. Puerling and Shelton and Burroughs are still living and still appear, very occasionally as the Hi-Lo's in and around Southern California. An accomplished reed player, Shelton has been a member of Clare Fischer's bands. Puerling still writes and arranges music and attends clinics for young jazz singers. Clark Burroughs is semi-retired and can sometimes be heard on film soundtracks.
