THE TROUBLES IN NEWCASTLE (DOWN)
The Troubles were a time in Northern Ireland dating from 1969 on into the mid 90s, when there were high amounts of violence between the Catholic and Protestant communities. The Troubles in Newcastle (Down) recalls events during the troubles in the small seaside town of Newcastle, where it is believed to have had incidents resulting in two fatalities:
'1973'
★ 21 July 1973 - Alphonsus Cunningham (21) and Pauline Kane (21), both Catholic members of the Provisional Irish Republican Army, were killed in a premature bomb explosion while travelling in a car in Newcastle.
