Plot
Jack Palance plays Charles Castle, a Hollywood A-list actor who refuses to renew his contract, enraging his studio boss, Stanley Shriner Hoff (played by Rod Steiger and reputedly based on Harry Cohn). His boss has knowledge of a very damaging secret about the star, and Hoff is willing to do anything to make the actor resign even if that means destroying his career. The film is a ruthless and poignant look at fame and the movie business.
Award and nomination
The film was nominated for the Leone d'Oro for Robert Aldrich at the Venice Film Festival and won the Silver Lion.
