![]() | Gold Diggers of 1935 "Lullaby Of Broadway" Academy Award winning Busby Berkeley production number from Gold Diggers of 1935. One can't help notice the poingnant moment near the end when the cat waits at the door for the "Broadway Baby" who is not coming home again because her "on the edge lifestyle" was fatal. This song was included in the 1980's Broadway production of 42nd Street, but was not in that 1933 film, of course. |
![]() | We're In The Money (Gold Diggers of 1933) Ginger Rogers is just SOOOO TOOOO CUTE in this clip - especially her rolling eyes. Can you decipher the Pig Latin verses? This is a Busby Berkeley number that showcases Ginger Rogers rather than the chorus line. There are also two "cameo" shots of Ned Sparks in this clip. All 42nd Street fans are familiar with Ned. The depression wasn't really over by 1933, so I don't really "get" this number. I LUV GINGER! |

![]() | Lullaby Of Broadway Gold Diggers of 1935 The number "Lullaby Of Broadway" is an immense production number used by Busby Berkeley in the film Gold Diggers of 1935. In the 1980's Broadway revival of the film 42nd Street, this song was incorporated into the play, although it was not in the original 1933 film. The number was sung on Broadway by Jerry Orbach, known to we youngsters only as Lenie Briscoe of "Law & Order. The Broadway play 42nd Street was a rare case of a movie being made into a play, rather than vice versa. Although not as outrageous as the Berkeley number "By A Waterfall" from "Footlight Parade," "Lullaby of Broadway" is outrageous in its own way, especially in the pre WW II era of goose stepping brown shirts, which it resembles. I'm sure the Germans copied Berkeley and not the other way around. Don't fear at the ending because this is a dream sequence where nobody dies. |
