THE HUSH SOUND
'The Hush Sound' is an indie rock quartet originating in Chicago, Illinois. Initially named "The Hush," but later changed to "The Hush Sound" due to the discovery of a rapper with the same name[1], the band consists of Bob Morris on vocals and guitar, Chris Faller on bass and vocals, Darren Wilson on drums and vocals, and Greta Salpeter on vocals and piano.
In 2005 the band released their first studio album ''So Sudden''. Their second studio album, ''Like Vines'', was released in 2006 under Fueled by Ramen. A third album is in the works and is expected to be recorded in October 2007 and released in early 2008 .
History
The very beginning
The Hush Sound was founded by Greta Salpeter and Bob Morris. The two met when Greta was in 7th grade and while Bob was in 10th. In the eyes of many of their peers, Bob and Greta were deemed an "odd couple." Bob had always been a player and performer of rock music, whereas Greta was a classical pianist.
Acquisition of additional members
The band officially formed in late 2004/early 2005, in terms of writing songs which they felt worthy of publication. They were originally going to be called "The Hush," but changed their name to "The Hush Sound" to avoid confusion with a similarly-named rapper. In their early work, they dealt mostly with acoustic music. Once they decided that a piano and guitar were not enough for the sound they wished to achieve, they started searching for a drummer and a bass player willing to join their band. They soon recruited drummer Darren Wilson and bassist Chris Faller who had played in a previous band together, Until Sundown.
Independent work
By the end of March of 2005, The Hush Sound took their music into the studio to record their debut full-length album. The studio was the Gallery of Carpet located in Villa Park, IL run by owner Brian Zieske. They named it "So Sudden;" a reflection on how quickly things were moving for the band. They released their first album with no label support at the time, but nevertheless sold 300 CDs in two nights.
Five months later, the band began playing shows. They soon gained the attention of Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz. On the day they were streaming "So Sudden" on purevolume, Ryan Ross of Panic! at the Disco discovered their page and passed it along to Pete Wentz. Wentz, liking what he heard, sent The Hush Sound an email, stating that he was interested in signing them to his Decaydance Records label.
Signing to a record label/creation of ''Like Vines''
The Hush Sound was soon signed to Decaydance Records. ''So Sudden'' was re-released under the label (with some minor lyric changes); and the band immediately immersed themselves in writing mode for their second album. "Like Vines" was recorded in March of 2006 over the course of three weeks with producer Sean O' Keefe and co-producer Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy.
Tours
The band's first major tour was the 2006 "Black Clouds and Underdogs" spring arena tour with headliners Fall Out Boy and The All-American Rejects with supporting acts Hawthorne Heights and From First to Last.
''Like Vines'' was released on June 6, 2006. In support of the new record, the band went on a summer tour with label mates Panic! At The Disco. (Singer/keyboardist Greta Salpeter missed her graduation from Benet Academy due to the tour.)) The album has since sold steadily. The band took a month-long break before beginning another tour with Jack's Mannequin, Copeland, and Daphne Loves Derby.
In November 2006, The Hush Sound embarked on their first headlining tour. They were supported by opening acts This Providence, This Is Me Smiling, and Murder By Death.
On March 7, 2007 The Hush Sound headed out with Straylight Run on a co-headling tour with Spitalfield and Pablo as supporting acts. One stop on the tour includes SXSW. This tour also included shows with headliners Mae.
The Hush Sound also toured with Boys Like Girls and headliner hellogoodbye. Destinations included the Wiltern in Los Angeles, The Warfield in San Francisco, and other cities and venues.
They have also played with The Plain White T's at the DuPage County Fair in Illinois on July 26th.
Their next co-headlining tour starts on August 12 with Rooney and guest Hello Stranger.
The next album
On recent tour dates, The Hush Sound has performed three new songs: "Honey", and two untitled songs, which fans recognize as "Love You Much Better" and "As You Cry", songs that will likely appear on their next album. They will be recording with producer Kevin Augunas, whom they met while on the SXSW tour. (Augunas' last producing work was with Cold War Kids) Morris stated on the band's official website that the band and himself were "extremely impressed" with the "positive force" of Augunas. The album is in the works and will be recorded in October and released in spring 2008.
