'The Left Hand of God' is a 1955 film drama made by 20th Century Fox. It was directed by Edward Dmytryk and produced by Buddy Adler, from a screenplay by Alfred Hayes, based on the novel ''The Left Hand of God'' by William Edmund Barrett.
The film stars Humphrey Bogart, Gene Tierney, Lee J. Cobb, Agnes Moorehead, E. G. Marshall, and Carl Benton Reid.

Bogart plays Jim Carmody, an American soldier. After crashing his plane in China, he becomes advisor to a Chinese warlord General Yang, played by Lee J. Cobb. However, after watching one of the General's soldiers brutally kill a priest, Jim decides to desert, which makes him eligible for capital punishment. Jim pretends to be a priest and manages to get out of the General's headquarters and run away to a mountain village. There he meets missionaries Beryl (played by Agnes Moorehead) and David (played by E.G. Marshall). Still posing as the priest, he falls in love with the attractive mission nurse Anne Scott (played by Gene Tierney). Anne feels ashamed because she is also attracted to him, but Jim writes to the bishop confessing that he is an impostor. At that moment, General Yang arrives, insisting that Jim rejoin his army or else he will burn down the village.
