THE OFFSPRING'S EIGHTH STUDIO ALBUM

'The Offspring's eighth studio album' is currently scheduled to be released sometime in late 2007/early 2008.[1] It will be their first studio album in nearly four years since 2003's ''Splinter''. It was originally due for release sometime in 2005 and 2006, but was not completed. As of now, an official title and release date for the album have not yet been confirmed by the band. However, several music outlets such Amazon.com are beginning to list this album as having an American street date of October 1, 2007. Amazon.co.jp lists the Japanese street date as being almost two weeks earlier (September 19, 2007).

Background information

Frontman Dexter Holland first mentioned the follow-up to ''Splinter'' in 2004. "People think of greatest hits like, 'Oh, does that mean you're going into acting?'" he says, referring to the compilation album which came out in 2005. "But I really want to put out another record next year. All the new songs feel pretty good."[2]
On February 7, 2006, Holland said in his journal that the band entered a demo studio to work on guitar tracks. "Well what's up this week? We went back in the demo studio last weekend, just Noodles and I, doing some guitar tracks. It was a blast. It feels good to get back in the studio and do some recording and just be a band, you know? I'm sure you do if you're in a band. We knocked off early because it was Noodles' birthday (remember?) and he had some ragin' to do. People are asking us about possibly doing some festivals in Europe this summer, which would be fun, but we thought it would be better to stay home and work on songs for another record. What do you think?"[3]
On February 15, 2006, Holland said in his journal that he went out of town to "meet with a guy who might produce" The Offspring's new album. "Last week I went out of town to meet with a guy who might produce our next record. I thought it went really well. Right now we‘re just kind of in that mode of figuring out what the next record is gonna be like, and writing songs. Why don‘t you guys write in and tell us what you think?" [4]
On June 13, 2006, Holland stated that the band (minus Willard) had been meeting every week and would begin recording shortly. He also confirmed that Willard had not officially left the band and was only on tour with Angels and Airwaves.[5]
On August 18, 2006, Holland updated the band's journal, saying that they had demoed 5 songs and are looking to go into the studio soon. He described the new songs as "lots of guitar, energy, lots of energy, and good songs." and "I think it's the best stuff we've done in a long time."
In September 2006, it was announced that the album would be produced by producer Bob Rock of Metallica fame. He said that he was working with Holland and "helping him sort out songs."[6]

Current status

On November 16, 2006, it was announced on the band's official website that recording had officially begun on the new album, and that a world tour would follow. [7]
On November 27, 2006, it was announced in Dexter's journal that the band had begun recording, and had entered the studio with 13 demos. It was also confirmed that the new album would have a release date within a month of spring 2007.
On December 5, 2006, it was announced in Dexter's journal that they were now working on eight guitar tracks for the new album and said that it currently has "no keyboards or samples or anything" all of them Holland suspects will be on the album.[8]
On March 14, 2007, Dexter wrote on the website journal that he was in Maui where Bob Rock lives and they have about 10 songs that he's recording the vocals on. He doesn't write much because, as he says, the record is still taking shape.[9]
On May 8, 2007, Dexter announced that most of the music for the 13 songs they were working on had been recorded and they were working on vocals. He also mentioned that they demo'd 10 other songs for the record, although the band is still not sure about which songs will make the final cut or not, or if they will properly record any of the other demos.
On May 11, 2007, Dexter announced that all of the songs going to be on the new album were completely new with no re-recordings of older songs. As he puts it "That would be cheating, wouldn't it?" There is some speculation amongst fans that this is false and that he was only trying to fool around with the fans, but as of the newest journal, all of the songs on the new album will be completely new. It should also be noted that the location of the newest journal entry has changed from Maui, Hawaii to Huntington Beach, California.[10]
On June 12, 2007, Dexter mentioned in his journal that the band plans on finishing the recording process for the new album within the next few months, and that a couple of the new tracks "sound like a friggin' freight train."[11]
On July 18, 2007, Dexter confirmed that the band has finished "two more songs" and the album is now being recorded in Orange County, California.[12]
On July 27, 2007, it was announced that then-Face to Face and Saves the Day member Pete Parada has been chosen to be The Offspring's new drummer replacing Atom Willard and that Josh Freese has recorded all the drum tracks for the new record.[13]

Possible tracklist

Although the tracklist has not been still officially confirmed yet, Dexter has said that there are 13 songs completed and the ones below are expected to appear on the new album.

★ "Takes Me Nowhere" (mentioned in Dexter's journal [14])

★ "Hammerhead" (debuted at the the Summer Sonic 2007 festival in Japan, and mentioned in the Dexter's journal[15]).
Even though the rumors about including "Pass Me By" are still ciruclating, it is mentioned that all the songs on the new album will be completely new, not including any outtake or re-recording of the old song.
