'''The Reporter''' was a 20th-century biweekly news magazine published in New York from 1949 through 1968.
In its heyday it was viewed as a prestigious intellectual forum. It ceased publication in 1968 due to the widening gap between editor and publisher Max Ascoli's hawkish stance on the Vietnam War on the one hand, and the opinions of readers and advertisers on the other.
A 1962 article mentions it as "being rated only behind ''Time'', ''U.S. News'', and ''Newsweek'' as the most referred to of all magazines used in [the] work of reporters," according to a footnote in a 2002 paper by Tom Lovell titled "American Liberal Intellectuals and the Vietnam War." [1]
In March of 2007, Dutch Americanist Elke van Cassel received her PhD, writing her dissertation, titled "A Cold War Magazine of Causes: A Critical History of The Reporter, 1949-1968" on the magazine.
