The story was based upon the (disputed) events surrounding the life of Katherine Ferrers, the wife of the major landowner in Markyate on the main London - Birmingham road.
The film was made at Gainsborough Studios in London.
It was loosely remade by Michael Winner in 1983 starring Faye Dunaway and Alan Bates, but failed at the box office. The remake gained some latter-day notoriety thanks to the fact that it includes a brief nude scene by actress Marina Sirtis who later became famous as one of the stars of .
