THOUSAND ISLAND LAKE

'Thousand Island Lake' is a large alpine lake in California's Sierra Nevada. It is within the boundaries of the Ansel Adams Wilderness, and accessible by either the John Muir Trail, the High Trail, or the River Trail from Agnews Meadow on the road to Devil's Postpile at Mammoth Lakes. The lake also lies along the Sierra High Route.
Thousand Island Lake sits at the base of Banner Peak in the Ritter Range. Ansel Adams made this lake famous with his black and white photographs. The lake is named for the many islands that dot its surface. It was probably named by Theodore S. Solomons, as it appears on his 1896 map; John Muir called it "Islet Lake."^[2]
