'Tijuca' (meaning marsh or swamp in Old Tupi) is a neighbourhood of the northern area of city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It comprises the regions of Saens Pena Square, Afonso Pena Square, Usina and Muda. According to the 2000 Census the district has close to 150,000 inhabitants. It is one of the most traditional districts in Rio and has the largest urban forest in the world, the Tijuca Forest. Mainly a middle class district, It has been historically inhabitated by Portuguese immigrant families and the families of military officers.
