Career
While attending ''Curtin University'', Winton wrote his first novel, ''An Open Swimmer''. This won ''The Australian/Vogel Literary Award'' and kickstarted his writing career. He is now one of Australia's most well-known novelists, writing both for adults and children.
In 1995 Winton's novel ''The Riders'' was shortlisted for the ''Booker Prize'', as was his 2002 book ''Dirt Music'', which is now being turned into a movie. He has won or been nominated for numerous other prizes including winning the ''Miles Franklin Award'' three times: for ''Shallows'' (1984), ''Cloudstreet'' (1991) and ''Dirt Music'' (2002). ''Cloudstreet'' is arguably his best-known work. His next novel, due for release in 2008, will be called ''Breath''.[1]
Tim Winton lives in Western Australia with his wife and three children.
Winton has a brother, Andrew Winton, who works as a professional musician and school chaplain [2] and a sister, Sharyn O'Neill, who is the current Director General of the West Australian Department of Education and Training. [3]
