TORONTO GENERAL HOSPITAL

The 'Toronto General Hospital' ('TGH'), part of the University Health Network, is a major teaching hospital in downtown Toronto, Canada. It is located in the Discovery District, directly north of the Hospital for Sick Children, across Gerrard Street West, and east of Princess Margaret Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital, across University Avenue. They are steps from Queen's Park and the Queen's Park subway station.
The hospital has existed at its current location since 1913. The hospital first started as a small shed used as a military hospital during the War of 1812. It was founded as York General in 1829 at Simcoe and King. TGH currently has 471 beds. Over the years, many renovations and additions have been done to expand the hospital from its first building along College Street, which for many years was known as the "College Wing." Given that the College Wing was no longer suitable for the needs of a modern 21st-century hospital, it now serves as the premises of the independent MaRS, a medical research convergence centre. As such, the hospital no longer has any frontage along College Street.
TGH's official address is at 200 Elizabeth Street Toronto, ON, Canada M5G 2C4, although there are entrances on University Avenue, Elizabeth Street and Gerrard Street. The Emergency Department is located on Elizabeth at the corner of Gerrard and treats 28,065 persons each year. The hospital also houses the major transplantation service for Ontario. Many organ transplants are undertaken here every year, including heart, lung, kidney, liver, pancreas and small intestine. Patients are referred from all over Canada.
In addition to treating tens of thousands of patients and helping in teaching to future physicians, nurses and technicians, the hospital is home to research through the Toronto General Research Institute.
Currently Sophie, Countess of Wessex, as a member of the Canadian Royal Family, is patron of the hospital.
