TORRE DEL GRECO

'Torre del Greco' (English: Tower of the Greek) is a town and comune in the Province of Naples in the Italian region of Campania, with a population of 90,607 (2001 census). The people speak a particular dialect called ''Torrese'', and are sometimes called ''Corallini'' because of the plentiful coral in the nearby sea.

Torrese

Torrese is influenced highly with Greek and Spanish words added into their dialect which is considered not understandable to northern Italians. The word for ''girl'' and ''boy'' in Torrese, for example, are ''guagliona'' and ''guaglione'', respectively. Both words stem from the Ancient Greek words for ''boy'' and ''girl'' found in the Greek island of Rhodes, whence the Neapolitan Greeks came from. The Italian words for ''boy'' and ''girl'' are ''ragazzo'' and ''ragazza''.
