TRAVIS BROWN (CYCLIST)

'Travis Brown' (born August 7, 1969) is an American professional bicycle racer. He primarily competes in cross-country mountain bike and cyclo-cross races but has also raced on road bicycles from time to time. Brown started racing professionally in 1990 and partially retired at the end of the 2004 season.
Brown is still taking part in mountain bike and cyclo-cross races as of 2005, however, he is not entering as many events as he did in the past. Brown is now less a part of the professional Trek-Volkswagen factory team, and more an incidentally-sponsored racer for the company, whose job is more in product development and testing of these parts in racing environments. His long experience in racing- along with his long professed love of epic training rides- makes him an ideal tester for Trek bikes and equipment.
Throughout his racing career, Brown has been recognized and loved for his unconventional personal style; ever-changing facial hair, earrings, and tattoos made him a superstar in MTB's early years. Though such styles would not be considered unique today, they were a source of controversy and interest in the early 1990's.
Brown was one of the first high profile racers to race on single-speed bicycles and on mountain bikes using 29"er wheels. He has twice won the Single Speed World Championships, in 1999 and 2002. Additionally, he is known for competing in both mountain bike and cyclo-cross races against geared racers, using single speed bicycles.
Due to Travis Brown's influence, Trek now offers a single-speed mountain bike based on his design. It uses a 29'' front wheel and 26'' rear wheel, a design called a 69''er.
Travis is notable for the length of his competitive racing career. In 1990 he raced the first official UCI World Mountain Biking Championships in his hometown of Durango, CO, won the US National Champion MTB XC race in 1999 and won the Marathon National Championship at Mammoth Mountain California in 2005.
