TREATY OF CRAIOVA

The 'Treaty of Craiova' was signed on September 7 1940 between Romania and Bulgaria. It was imposed on Romania by Nazi Germany and under its terms Romania returned the southern part of Dobruja (the ''Cadrilater'' or "Quadrilateral" in Romanian) to Bulgaria and agreed to participate in the organization of a population exchange.
The 80,000 Romanian and Aromanian colonists were forced to abandon their houses in Southern Dobruja. Most of them had settled there since the end of the Second Balkan War in 1913 (see Treaty of Bucharest, 1913), when the territory was occupied by Romania. They resettled in the northern part, while 65,000 Bulgarians of the northern part had to leave their real estate and settle in Bulgaria.
