ICC WORLD TWENTY20
(Redirected from Twenty20 World Championship)
The ICC 'Twenty20 World Championship' is the international championship of Twenty20 cricket. The event is organised by the sport's governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC) and is contested by all Test-playing nations (currently the only ten teams officially allowed to play the longest form and highest level of cricket), plus qualifiers. The inaugural championship is going to be held in South Africa in 2007.[1] The tournament will consist of 12 teams. The championship will be held around every two years.
The 'World Cricket League' is a series of international one-day cricket tournaments for national teams without Test status, administered by the International Cricket Council. Any Associate or Affiliate member of the ICC may compete in the league system, which has promotion and relegation between each division. The series will complete its first cycle in 2007, with teams allotted into divisions based on their performance in the qualification tournaments for the 2007 World Cup. The finalists of the World Cricket League Division One final will qualify for 2007 Twenty20 World Championship.
The upcoming tournament in September 2007 will feature 12 teams, including all 10 Test-playing countries, in a Thirteen-day event. The ten Test-playing teams automatically qualified for the tournament, while the other two teams qualified from the World Cricket League event in January and February. 3 ICC match referees and 9 umpires will officiate the matches. The up and coming tournament will start on 11 September at Wanderers Johannesburg and will end on 24September also at the Wanderers [2]
The International Cricket Council's executive committee vote for the hosts of the tournament after examining the bids made by the nations keen to hold a Twenty20 World Championship. South Africa will host in 2007, England in 2009, Sri Lanka in 2012 and Bangladesh in 2014.
South Africa and England will host the first two competitions. The ICC decided that South Africa and England should host the first two tournaments because they were the earliest adopters of the format.[3]
