'U.S. Highway 421' is a spur of U.S. Highway 21. It runs for 941 miles (1,514 km) from Michigan City, Indiana, at U.S. Highway 20 to Fort Fisher, North Carolina. It passes through the states of Indiana, Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. It goes through the cities of Indianapolis, Indiana; Frankfort, Kentucky; Lexington, Kentucky; Harlan, Kentucky; Bristol, Tennessee; Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Greensboro, North Carolina; and Wilmington, North Carolina.
U.S. 421 is famous for a stretch in Tennessee known as "The Snake". Motorcyclists from all over the country travel to Shady Valley Country Store (a.k.a. The Snake Pit) to indulge in the motorcycling atmosphere where over 600 bikes have gathered at once to "Charm the Snake". These brave souls take on the 489 curves that lie within 12 miles of the Pit. The Snake Pit also sports photos and parts of motorcycles that "Got Snakebit". "The Wailing Wall" of dismembered parts warns riders of the dangers of making a mistake on The Snake and concludes with the line: "And after we mourn, your parts will adorn this wall."
