History

U.S. Route 311 was designated in 1926 to run from U.S. Route 11 in Roanoke south along State Route 33 to North Carolina.[1] US 220, another 1926 U.S. Highway, was extended south into Virginia by 1935.[2] It replaced the piece of State Route 18 north of Covington, all of 'State Route 12' (Clifton Forge to near Roanoke), and all of US 311 in Virginia.
