UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2004-05

The '2004-05' season of the European UEFA Champions League football club tournament was won by Liverpool in a dramatic final against A.C. Milan in the Atatürk Olympic Stadium. 3-0 down at half-time, Liverpool scored three goals in six minutes to force extra time. Goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek performed a memorable double save, a header and a point-blank shot from Andriy Shevchenko in the final minutes, and went on to save two penalties as his team won the cup on penalties. Liverpool captain, Steven Gerrard, was named UEFA's Footballer of the Year for his key role in the final and throughout the Champions League season.
As it was their fifth victory in the competition (the third most of any team), Liverpool kept the cup and received the UEFA badge of honour. A new trophy was made for the 2005-06 season.

Trivia

Maccabi Tel Aviv became the first Israeli team to host a UEFA Champions League match on Israeli soil since Maccabi Haifa hosted their 2002-03 matches at GSP Stadium in Nicosia, Cyprus due to security restrictions imposed by UEFA.

Maccabi Tel Aviv's first ever match in the UEFA Champions League against Bayern Munich was played on the eve of the Jewish holy day of Rosh Hashanah. Despite pressing UEFA to move the match, the game proceeded as scheduled becoming the only football game to be ever played in Israel on a Jewish holy day.
