Ulrich von Jungingen.
'Ulrich von Jungingen' (1360 –
July 15 1410) was the 26th
Grand Master of the
Teutonic Knights, serving from 1407-10. His policy of confrontation with the
Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the
Kingdom of Poland led to disaster for the Order in the
Battle of Grunwald.
Born in
Jungingen in southwestern
Germany, Ulrich moved to the
Ordenstaat in
Prussia and resided in
Schlochau (Człuchów). He was
Komtur of
Balga (1396 – 1404) and Marshal and Komtur of
Königsberg (1404–07). When his elder brother Grand Master
Konrad von Jungingen died in 1407, Ulrich was chosen the next grand master.

Death of Ulrich von Jungingen, a detail of a painting by
Jan Matejko
Ulrich led the German forces against Poland and Lithuania in the
Polish-Lithuanian-Teutonic War. However, he was killed in the
Battle of Grunwald (Tannenberg) in 1410.
The painting ''Battle of Grunwald'' by
Jan Matejko supposedly illustrates the moment when Ulrich, dressed in white with a black cross, is killed by infantry when trying to attack
Vytautas the Great, Grand Duke of Lithuania.
