UNITED GOLD COAST CONVENTION
The 'United Gold Coast Convention' was a political party whose aim was to bring about Ghanaian independence from British rule after the Second World War.
The party was founded by J. B. Danquah in 1946. In 1947, Kwame Nkrumah returned to Ghana to accept Danquah's invitation to become party General Secretary. The more middle class and moderate Danquah fell out with the more go-getting Nkrumah over the direction of Ghana's independence movement and the party spilt after two years. Nkrumah went on to form the Convention People's Party and later become the independent nation's first president.
