Universidad del PacÃfico (UP) is a private university established in 1962 by a group of Peruvian entrepreneurs supported by the Jesuit community. Today is has become a university specialized in the areas of economics and business administration. In the past three decades, UP has been ranked as the most prestigious higher education institution in its fields of specialization in Peru, and among the leading institutions of its kind in the Latin American region.
At the undergraduate level UP offers Bachelor's degrees in Economics, and in Business Administration and Accounting. At the graduate level, it offers a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Finance. At the moment it has approximately 1,600 students enrolled at the undergraduate level, and 500 students enrolled in graduate programs.
The academic year at the Universidad del PacÃfico at the undergraduate level consists of 2 semesters. The first semester begins in late-March and ends in July; the second semester begins in mid-August and ends in mid-December. A break of approximately 3 to 4 weeks occurs in between both semesters. At the graduate level, the academic year consists of 3 terms: January-April, May-August, and September-December.
The University conducts large-scale research projects within Peru and at the Latin American level, particularly in the areas of international economics and trade, public policy, regulation of the economy, health and environmental economics, human development, civil society and philanthropy, and SMEs. Some of these are funded by the Kellogg Foundation, the World Bank, the InterAmerican Development Bank and other regional development agencies.
UP currently has over 60 partners for bilateral student exchange across Europe and the Americas. In general, these programs operate by each student paying tuition fees at their home institution. Exchange students are then enrolled as full-time students at the host university, and are responsible for their travel arrangements, accommodation, meals, living expenses, health insurance, books, and other study materials. Students normally transfer the credits earned after their stay in the partner university. The International Relations Office (or its equivalent) at each university offers orientation and assist exchange students in finding housing and adjusting to life in the new country. Common housing options include a student-housing block off campus, an apartment outside the university, or a homestay with a local family. In average, it exchanges approximately 60-70 students each year under this modality.
On the other hand, visiting students and free movers –who chose the university as a study abroad destination- can also study for credit on the campus during a full academic year or one semester. Contrary to the first option, these students pay a fee for tuition to the host university and after successfully completion of their studies they receive an official transcript which can then be used to transfer the credits earned.
One of the preferred subjects chosen by their international students is called “Proyección Social" (translated as Community Outreach), where students become advisors for micro-entrepreneurs working in marginal impoverished areas of Metropolitan Lima and help them organize their firms and design their business and marketing plans. At the end of the semester a fair is organized on our campus, where products are sold to the public. This constitutes a first-hand approach to the informal economy of developing countries like Peru and to the functioning of an economy based on small enterprises, which most of the international students find extremely valuable.
UP is also a highly technological university, an example of which is the extended use of an educational on-line course management and production tool called "Blackboard". Blackboard assists students and professors in using the Web technologies for the production of online courses, and web-enhanced traditional classes. On this platform materials are made available to students, while other facilities such as digital drop-box for papers and assignments, direct links to internet sites, chat-rooms for study and dialogue with lecturers are also provided. At present, UP stands as one of the few higher education institutions in Latin America to use this educational device.
