It is one of four Catholic schools in the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral, and was founded as a girls' convent school by the Faithful Companions of Jesus in 1849, at the invitation of the Bishop of Shrewsbury. The school is located within the Catholic Diocese of Shrewsbury. The current headmistress is Mrs Patricia Young, and the current head girl for 2006/7 is sixth former Sally Pickin. 'Upton Hall School FCJ' was awarded 'Outstanding' by Ofsted in 2006.
