URBAN LAND INSTITUTE

The 'Urban Land Institute', or 'ULI', is a non-profit organization with offices in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and London. It was founded in 1936 and currently has over 36,000 members. More than 20% of the members work in government, academia, or public-private partnerships. Most of the rest are involved in the real estate and urban development industries. Its stated mission is "to provide leadership in the responsible use of land and in creating and sustaining thriving communities worldwide." ULI advocates progressive development, covering topics such as sustainability, smart growth, compact development, place making, and workforce housing.
The organization makes several awards annually, including the ULI Awards for Excellence, the Gerald D. Hines Urban Design Student Competition, the J. C. Nichols Prize for Visionaries in Urban Development, and the ULI-Kenneth M. Good Graduate Student Fellowship.
