V-DAY

:''V-Day, in military parlance, is sometimes used to designate "Victory Day" (the day an operation successfully concludes), and informally as short-hand for "Valentine's Day"; see Military designation of days and hours.''
'V-Day' is a movement started by Eve Ensler, creator of ''The Vagina Monologues'', to end domestic violence and other forms of violence against women. It takes place on or around 14 February, Valentine's Day, when hundreds of organizations around the world stage performances of ''The Vagina Monologues''. It was first held in 1998. Some proponents of the movement have implied that they seek to replace the traditional observation of Valentine's day with V-Day.
The movement has received criticism from many, including both men and women, who see Ensler's attempt to replace the romantically themed Valentine's day with meditations on violence against women as a negative presence in gender relations. Critics believe that if V-Day is to be continued it should be moved to a different day, as they see Valentine's day as a positive reinforcement of non-violence because of its focus on love and romance.
The movement has also received praise and support from many, including both men and women, who believe that Valentine's Day, narrowly focused on heterosexual romantic love and overly commercialized, should be a day to celebrate ALL love and to promote healthy relationships. Advocates believe that every day should be "V-Day," because all women, all human beings, have the right to live in safety and love.
In 2007, more than 3000 V-Day events took place in 1150 colleges and communities in the U.S. and around the world. To date, the V-Day movement has raised over $40 million and educated millions about the issue of violence against women and the efforts to end it, crafted international educational, media and PSA campaigns, launched the Karama program in the Middle East, reopened shelters, and funded over 5000 community-based anti-violence programs and safe houses in Kenya, South Dakota, Egypt and Iraq.
'V-Day' is an abbreviation of Vaffanculo-day, the 8th September, a day chosen by Beppe Grillo to collect signatures all around the world to change the Italian electoral law with a citizen law.
