Academics

Valley offers many academic courses, including many Advanced Placement courses.

The 4 A's

At Valley High School, students are encouraged to be involved in a variety of ways at the school. The administration has defined the four following areas: Academics, Athletics, Arts and Activities.
Athletics

[1] Valley High is well known throughout Iowa for its strong athletics. The school has been honored as the top school for 4A athletics in Iowa by local newspaper the ''Des Moines Register'' in 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005.
The Valley High School football team has gone to the Iowa State Championship game in 4A the past four years and has won three of those times (2002, 2003, 2005).
The Valley High School Baseball team has won the 4A state title each of the past 4 years (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006).
Valley's Athletic Director, Steve Duncan, was named the National High School Athletic Director of the year in 2006.
Arts

The Arts, both performing and visual, reflect the soul of Valley’s strong tradition of success. The study of Art History, Art Criticism, Art Production and Aesthetics guides the curriculum in the Visual Arts Department. Many student artists receive both recognition and scholarships when they submit portfolios to colleges and art schools across the nation. The Valley Music Department was honored with the first GRAMMY® Signature School award in 1999. The 240 member Valley Marchmasters were selected to perform in the 2004 Tournament of Roses Parade. The Valley Orchestra has completed concert tours in Austria and Italy. The school's vocal groups and jazz ensembles have performed in several national and international festivals from Carnegie Hall to Disney World. Drama participants have been selected as Iowa High School Speech Association All-State performers and have received the All-State Sweepstakes Trophy, as well as the Critic’s Choice Award.
Band Program

Valley High School is known for its strong music program. In 1999, Valley was honored with a Grammy Signature for Best High School Music Program. In 2004, their marching band, the Valley Marchmasters, was one of the bands featured in the annual "Tournament of Roses Parade" in Pasadena, California. In March 2007, the band traveled to Dublin, Ireland to march in the Saint Patrick's Day Parade.

The Valley Marchmasters consists of all 10-12 graders enrolled in band at Valley High School. Freshmen from Valley Southwoods may also audition to be in the marching band.
The regionally-renowned Valley High School Marchmasters have 165 uniformed students enrolled.
Orchestra Program

In addition to a strong band program, Valley sports a very talented orchestral program. Although it may not be as large as the band program, it is still one of the largest in the state, if not the largest. The orchestra program director is Phil Peters, who also teaches AP Music Theory, and plays bass in the Des Moines Symphony.
The orchestra program sports three separate orchestras: the mostly sophomore orchestra, the one for upper class men, and an auditioned chamber orchestra. The orchestra often collaborates with the band, playing symphonies and other full orchestral works. In June of 2007, the orchestra traveled to New York City to play at Carnegie Hall as a part of NYBOF07.
Valley Drama

The Valley High School Drama Department is run by the drama teacher, Ms. Stacy Hansen. In Fall 2006, the school performed the play, The Laramie Project. In Spring 2007, the Valley Drama Department is performing the classic William Shakespeare play Romeo and Juliet.
Valley also competes in the Iowa High School Speech Association contests, where they have won the Sweepstakes Banner three years in a row, and have won at All State.
Radio and News

The school newspaper is the Spotlight, a member of the High School National Ad Network. In the early 1980's, the Spotlight was named the best high school newspaper in the United States. The school also has a radio station, KWDM. Valley Principal Vicky Poole was named Principal of the Year (2006) by the American News Teachers Association.

Valley Southwoods

In 1995, the West Des Moines school board voted to create Valley Southwoods, a school built specifically to house the 9th grade. Valley Southwoods was completed in the summer of 1996. Many members of the community question why the old school was not turned into the 9th grade only school, and have the new school turned into 10th-12th. In terms of the location near the school's stadium, and the amount of room for parking (a crisis Valley High School faces today), the current locations of the schools can be deemed nothing but illogical, absurd, and fallacious. The principal is Mr. Kent Abrahamson, and Southwoods is one of only two all 9th grade schools in the nation.
The freshman high school has a creative layout. Classes are held in one of six "pods", with teachers for all major subjects in each pod. Each pod also contains the lockers for students who belong to that pod. These pods are Green Down, Green Up, Blue Down, Blue Up, Red Down, and Red Up, however, Red Up does not feature any core classes. It is used for foreign language classes.

Construction

Valley High is currently being remodeled and the work is expected to be completed by 2008. This includes a new two-story addition and the demolition of an entire section of the school to make room for parking.
