![]() | Summer holiday trip 2007: Lavertezzo, Ticino, Switzerland Lavertezzo is a small Italian speaking village located in the Valle Verzasca (Verzasca valley), Canton of Ticino, Switzerland. Amie and me stopped here after having visited the Verzasca Dam (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9E-3t1aVxY ) and driving further into the valley. The village hosts the beautiful bridge "Ponte dei Salti", a Roman stone bridge built in the 17th century. With its two elegant bridge archs, the bridge crosses the Verzasca River. In the summer months, the bridge acts as a popular springboard for the brave youth to jump into the river. The Verzasca River's emerald-green colour actually gave the Verzasca Valley its name: "verde aqua" is Italian for "green water". |
![]() | Summer holiday trip 2007: Verzasca Dam, Ticino, Switzerland The Verzasca Dam is a 220 meter (722 feet) high arch hydroelectric dam in the Valle Verzasca (Verzasca Valley), Canton of Ticino, southern Italian speaking part of Switzerland. Amie and me came accross the dam during our first half of our summer trip in August 2007 in Switzerland, when entering the beautiful valley of Verzasca (Valle Verzasca) located in the Locarno district of the Canton of Ticino, Switzerland. The dam was constructed between 1960 and 1965 and forms the Vogorno lake (Lago di Vogorno), an artificial reservoir. Made of concrete, the structure dams the Verzasca River and retains over 100 million cubic meters of water. It is (as of 2007) the 25th tallest dam in the world. The dam gained a certain popularity as it was part of the opening scene of the 1995 James Bond film Goldeneye, in which James Bond jumps off the top of the dam in an attempt to gain access to the heavily guarded Russian chemical weapons factory below, reaching a speed of up to 120mph during his eight-second freefall down the studded concrete wall. Today, this is the biggest bungee jump in the world. |

![]() | Summer holiday trip 2007: Sonogno Sonogno is the very last village of the Verzasca Valley (Valle Verzasca) located in the Canton of Ticino, southern Italian speaking part of Switzerland. The Italian speaking village is mostly crowded with visitors during the day, but towards the later afternoon when the tourist busses have left the village, it will reveal its natural beauty to those who stay over night at the hotel or one of the summer cottages, or - like we did - for bed and breakfast at a local family. We actually stated there for two nights, spending our time with hiking, walking around and eating at one of the local restaurants. We think that it would be worth to staying one or two weeks there, enjoying the healthy climate, green nature and the quiet ambiance of the picturesque village. |
