'The Almighty Vice Lord Nation' (abbreviated 'AVLN', 'VLN' or 'ASVLN') is the oldest and second-largest street gang in Chicago. They are believed to have been originally formed sometime in 1958, as a youth gang in the Illinois State Training School for Boys in St. Charles, also known as the St. Charles Juvenile Correctional Facility. Many of the youths came from the impoverished 16th Street Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side of Chicago.
In the late 1960s/70s they eventually organized into a community-oriented youth gang called the Conservative Vice Lords, largely influenced by the Black Panther Party and are still largely based on Chicago's West Side. Their demise was largely due to Cointelpro type operations carried out by the Chicago Police Department. Though the gang's official colors are black and gold, members wear all colors, and they are part of a larger, Chicago-based gang coalition known as the People Nation. The Vice Lords also have a large presence in cities such as Memphis, Des Moines, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Jackson, East St. Louis, Aurora, and Houston. Conservative Vice Lords (CVL) are the biggest with estimate of 15,000+ gang members .
Vice Lord street gangs use a variety of gang graffiti symbols or emblems, to identify themselves and their gang 'turf' including:
★ Rabbit wearing a bow tie (The ''Playboy'' logo)
★ Martini glass
★ Top hat
★ Cane
★ Five-point star - The five points represent (clockwise from top): Love, peace, truth, justice and freedom
★ Crescent moon (Islamic)
★ Scimitar or Arabian sword (Islamic)
★ Pitchfork pointing down - The pitchfork is a symbol of the Gangster Disciples, the inversion is a sign of disrespect
★ Broken heart with wings - As above, the heart with wings is a symbol of the Gangster Disciples, breaking it is a sign of disrespect
★ Like the Black P. Stones, the Vice Lords utilize pseudo-Islamic ideology and symbolism in their gang motif
Some of the numerous factions of Vice Lords are:
★ Traveling Vice Lords (TVL)
★ Cicero Insane Vice Lords (CIVL)
★ Conservative Vice Lords (CVL)
★ Mafia Insane Vice Lords (MIVL)
★ Renegade Vice Lords (RVL)
★ Unknown Vice Lords (UVL) (Consists of primarily mentally-challenged children.)
★ Undertaker Vice Lords (UTVL)
★ Imperial Insane Vice Lords
★ Spanish Vice Lords
★ insane killer vice lord/killer vice lord(IKVL/KVL)
The various factions of Vice Lords street gangs are not necessarily allies. Some factions are vicious rivals of other factions, showing a degree of in-fighting (as is the case with Gangster Disciples and Black Disciples from the rival Folks Nation). However, in the Illinois Prison system, Vice Lord factions usually come together as a unified Vice Lord 'nation'. The Four Corner Hustlers are a separate faction of the Vice Lords gang, and are not identified as Vice Lords, but as their own independent.
Each faction of the Vice Lords has their own 'Chief' and ranking officers. However, high-ranking members that hold the title of 'Universal Elite' are to be given respect by all Vice Lord factions.
